Professional skills I have learned from the Practicum and the whole TESOL program

Throughout the practicum, there was various opportunities upon which I can reflect and develop requisite skills for my career of instruction of English, namely, analytical/assessment skills, planning skills, communication skills, cultural competency skills, and leadership skills.

One area where I honed my analytical or assessment skills was during the evaluation of peers' microteaching presentations. As part of the practicum, all of us exchange and provide each other with constructive feedback upon which we can self-assess and evaluate our teaching strategies. This process allowed me to critically analyze my personal approaches, identify strengths, and suggest areas for improvement. Such engagement in a  evaluative process both enhanced my ability to analyze teaching practices and deepened my understanding of effective pedagogy. Planning skills were also a crucial aspect of this practicum journey. From organizing the field trip to coordinating microteaching lessons, workshops, and even a gala, I had the opportunity to develop my planning skills across various contexts. These experiences taught me the importance of careful planning, adaptability, and attention to detail. Through careful planning, I was able to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences where all necessary resources and materials were readily available.

Effective communication skills were essential in fostering positive relationships and collaboration during my practicum. I learned that communication goes beyond exchanging information; it involves active listening, empathy, and clear execution of ideas. By collaboratively working tegether, actively engaging in dialogue with peers, and being open to different perspectives, I was able to enhace my ability to communicate effectively with others. This skill proved invaluable in establishing rapports and building connections with students, colleagues, and seniors, which ultimately, creating a supportive professional learning community.

Cultural competency skills were also of paramount importance in the regional teaching contexts I encountered during the practicum. Teaching English in local settings exposed me to a multitude of backgrounds, motivations, and traditions. This experience heightened my regional awareness and emphasized the importance of fostering an inclusive classroom. By respecting and valuing the backgrounds of my students, I was able to create an environment that celebrated diversity and promoted mutual understanding.

Leadership skills were also an integrated part throughout my practicum, particularly through adaptability and social responsibility. As an aspiring educator, I recognized the importance of adapting my teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of students, regardless of their backgrounds. Additionally, social responsibility played a significant role in my leadership development. I strived to create a supportive learning environment. By taking an active role in advocating for my students and promoting positive change, I am aspired to demonstrate the commitment to being a responsible and compassionate leader.

All in all, the practicum experience provided valuable opportunities for my personal growth and various areas, including the bonding process with my significant one. From developing analytical/assessment skills through evaluating peers' microteaching presentations to honing planning, communication, cultural competency, and leadership skills, this practicum journey equipped me with a solid foundation for my future as an educator. I am grateful for the valuable lessons learned and look forward to continuing my professional development as I am continuing to “wading through” my teaching career.
